Industrial engineering competencies in the era of Industry 4.0

Competency-based training poses a challenge for higher education in the era of Industry 4.0. Based on research and outreach activities carried out by the Industrial Engineering program at the academic unit where the work is developed, a greater need for competencies related to digital transformation has been observed. This article refers to the first stage of a research project whose main objective is to link competencies in academic training with the needs of companies regarding digital transformation. The theoretical and methodological development is outlined to conduct a state-of-the-art study on the topic and to propose a survey tool to explore the professional profile of graduates and discover their knowledge in new technologies, while also exploring the needs of companies in this area. Additionally, an analysis is conducted of the curriculum programs to identify the gaps between the developed contents and those associated with this new era
